When I was a kid adults used to tell me NOT to eat wild mushrooms. Thinking about it now, how dumb did they think I was? (no comments) Was I walking around putting everything in my mouth? What made them think I needed the warning? Instead of watching cartoons was I foraging in the yard? If it was disguised as candy I can see the concern, but it was a vegetable. Growing on the ground. If I'm being generous they could have pointed to a mushroom and said, "That's a vegetable. It doesn't taste very good." And I would have been, like, "Heard. I won't go near it."
Restaurant of the Week
Jack Brown's Beer and Burger Joint
I'm not sure why others enjoy Jack Brown's, but I love the "dive bar" setting and amazingly, greasy burgers. It's also worth mentioning they have a great beer selection. Great burgers and beers. A perfectly simple business plan.
I met the branch manager/owner and he explained to me how they started the first Jack Brown's by JMU in Harrisonburg, VA. This particular guy loved the Outer Banks and talked them in to opening a location in Kill Devil Hills. It seems to have worked out well for them. It's a small place with a backyard and they often have live music either inside or outside, depending on the weather.
As described on their About Page, the place resembles your cool friend's man cave. A friendly and cozy place to hang out and have a good time. You won't find fresh vegetables on your burger, but you'll get great beef and an array of interesting condiments. I'm a big fan of the DR. GONZO. It's topped with sautéed mushrooms, caramelized Guinness onions, applewood smoked bacon and Swiss cheese. And don't forget the side of sweet potato fries.
Is It Okay To Call Them Commies?
Having grown up near the D.C. Beltway I've been a Washington football fan my entire life. (BTW, I'm not against dropping the Redskins moniker, I just hate the name "Commanders". I think it's just plain stupid. I would have preferred sticking with Washington Football Team. At least it was unique.) When Dan Snyder took over ownership I tried, in vain, to maintain some optimism but, like playing "I got your nose" with someone much smarter than myself, my frustration continued to grow until I decided to hide my fandom in a closet and not come out until they became relevant again. *whispering*. Is it okay to come out of the closet now?
Being around sports my whole life, I'm a big believer in culture. That's why I'm willing to jump back on the bandwagon with two feet because, win or lose, they've rebuilt this organization the right way, with the right people, and with a sense of values. It's no longer the embarrassment that Dan Snyder put together. Hail!
What I'm Drinking
Over the years I have created several morning habits. Somewhere along the line I began drinking a tall glass of water just after getting up. Because I have AFib (atrial fibrillation) and it seems to be precipitated, in part, by dehydration, this became a strong habit for me. Eventually I decided to kick it up a notch and turn the water in to an electrolyte drink. I'm currently settled in to LMNT. These low sugar packets are loaded with sodium, magnesium, and potassium. It's a great tasting drink. Between this, less processed food, and a little medication; my AFib is under control. If you're an active person you might enjoy LMNT as well.
Monkeys on the Lam
Over 40 monkeys escaped from a South Carolina research facility. Searchers have used PB&J and Froot Loops cereal to retrieve some of the vagabond monkeys. (What, no mushrooms?)
