corolla cantina ocracoke pirate festival twiddy u.s. life-saving station Oct 06, 2023
WHAT WERE WE THINKING?
I have a confession to make. I often scroll my Facebook feed to look at adoptable dogs. Until last weekend. A friend was trying to relocate a puppy and after one look my scrolling days were over. We took this guy home on Sunday and I've been exhausted ever since. We call him Rocco (although he doesn't respond to anything we say) and he's a mix of Rottweiler, Labrador, and Great Pyranese (and more). In short, we got ourselves a big, hairy dog. Pray for me.

THINGS THAT MAKE ME WONDER
Canister With Asteroid Sample Can't Be Opened
I once watched an episode of Storage Wars where they dropped a locked safe on to the parking lot pavement to open it up. I wonder if NASA has tried that.

THINGS TO DO
Duck Jazz Festival, Oct. 7-8, 2023
This free concert is a great way to experience the Town of Duck.

Blackbeard’s Pirate Jamboree, Ocracoke, Oct. 27-28, 2023
This annual festival is full of contests, entertainment, rum, canons, and, oh yeah, pirates.

What I Learned This Week
If you visit Twiddy Realty in Corolla (1142 Ocean Trail, Corolla, NC), you'll probably see an old building facing the road.  This used to be the Kill Devil Hills U.S. Life-Saving Station.  You’re probably wondering why a building from Kill Devil Hills is in Corolla. According to Clark Twiddy, president of Twiddy & Company, the building was about to be burned down to make way for something new when Clark's dad offered to relocate it to Corolla where property was more affordable and he could repurpose the structure as a real estate office.

Here's the interesting part. This building was constructed in 1878 and was operational in 1903. When the Wright Brothers needed manual assistance moving their experimental airplane, the crew from this Life-Saving Station assisted.

Places To Eat
Corolla Cantina
While I was in Corolla this week I decided to try a new restaurant for lunch. The Corolla Cantina is not far from Historic Corolla and is a cool, little place with very casual dining indoors and out. The Baja-inspired menu is well rounded and portions are excellent. Be sure to check out their Taco Tuesdays during the off-season and see what they have on tap.  Enjoy.

Friendly Reminder
It's never too early to start planning your next Outer Banks vacation.  A popular time of year to visit the Outer Banks is Thanksgiving. It's commonly a time when out-of-town home owners decide to enjoy their investment. Historically, the weather can be very hit-or-miss. Some years it's awesome and we spend the whole time outdoors. Like the year my mom and I went kayaking in Ginguite Creek and a giant swan flew at her and made her tip over. Ahhh, good times. Other times it's miserable and we sit inside and watch football. Either way, you're on the Outer Banks.

If you're looking to book something (anywhere, frankly), consider using this link and if you make a reservation I may receive a small commission. Cheers!

Have a Great Weekend,
