Confessions of a Nags Head Woods Experience on the Outer Banks of NC

activities Nov 29, 2021
Bo and John in Nags Head Woods.

I have a confession to make. It's not a big deal to everyone else, but it keeps me up at night. Yeah, I could pretend it never happened, but what if this was just the tip of the iceberg?

Here's the thing. I've lived here for 23 years and up until last month I had never been down the full length of South Old Nags Head Woods Road. The worst part is that I was brought there by people who don't even live here!

If you don't enjoy being in the woods or local history feel free to move on. If you like to explore hidden treasures on a remote part of a resort island, check this place out.

The road winding through Nags Head Woods is mostly dirt and can be very narrow. It sits on property protected by the Nags Head Woods Preserve and The Nature Conservancy, but back in the early 1900's it was home to an active community. To go down this road is like stepping back in time, and you're still on the Outer Banks.

I rode an electric bike down the entire length. It was so amazing I brought my wife a week later. She was equally impressed. Both times I left wanting to explore more of this huge area.

Which leads me to wonder; what other things have I missed on the Outer Banks? I need to check out the bears in Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge. I want to find a shipwreck. I've got to show people the wild horses. I've got questions. I need to find the answers.

So much to do. I need to start a list.

Best wishes,

John Van Lunen
