Best Hat For Active Watersports: Shelta

equipment hats sun protection Dec 25, 2021
A baseball hat is fine for protecting the top of your head and forehead from the sun, but what about your ears, nose, and neck?  There are two problems with large brim hats currently on the market:  Most hats with a large brim are made out of straw, which doesn't hold up after getting wet.  The other option is something made out of polyester and it doesn't have the stiffness to keep its shape.  Cotton is another common material typically seen with boonie hats but once it gets wet, will not hold its shape.

The Shelta finally got it right.  This hat solves all the problems.  The boonie design gives me more coverage for the neck and ears.  The unflipping brim keeps it on my head.  The neck strap prevents it from flying off while motoring or surfing.  And if it does fall off, it floats!  The hat comes in different designs, patterns, and colors.  My favorite design is the Seahawk in desert camo.

I have worked outdoors a good portion of my life.  In addition to 27 summers of working water sports I've also been a P.E. teacher, lacrosse coach, sailor, windsurfer, and surfer.  I realized early on that I needed to protect my head from excessive sun exposure.  Skin cancer is real and I wasn't about to throw caution to the wind.

When I started spending more time in/on the water it became very apparent I needed more coverage than just a baseball hat.  On top of that I needed something that could stand-up to the elements.  I’ve tried everything.  Cotton boonie hats, straw hats, floppy hats, bucket hats, etc. The Shelta Hat, however, checks every box and is tough enough to do it all summer long. If it gets dirty from sweat and grime, you can easily clean it and get it back in to the rotation.

I wear my Shelta whenever I'm going to spend a lot of time in the sun. I’ve used this hat while motoring on a jet-ski, paddleboarding, sailing on a Hobie Cat, and coaching lacrosse. I even wear it while I'm surfing because I know if it falls off, it still floats.

My favorite features:

  • Provide shade for ears and neck
  • Washable
  • Neck cord
  • Stiff brim
  • Quick-drying fabric
  • Breathable
  • Floats

If you're active in the outdoors and worried about sun exposure, you should seriously consider a Shelta hat. It's the perfect hat for outdoor activities.
