As a long-time business owner in the watersports industry I've had plenty of time to experiment and find things that work. One item that's worth every penny is the Pro Teck Super Flex Fin. We rent a lot of paddleboards and surfboards and the first thing we do after receiving a new board is remove the stock fins, store them in a safe place, and install the Pro Teck Super Flex Fins.
The "Flex" in the name means they are designed to bend, if necessary. This is very important for us because customers can be slightly abusive with our equipment. I'm not sure what they are doing when they take a board off-site (and I'm pretty sure I don't want to know), but the stock fins inevitably come back broken. Although the Super Flex Fins are more expensive, we found them to be much more durable in the long run.
Are they unbreakable? No. (Ask any teenage male to break them and they will not be denied. In addition, they'll tell you descriptively and precisely how they succeeded.) But they are still incredibly more durable than a stock fin.
An added benefit of their pliable construction (and why they were invented in the first place) is they are safer to use should they run up against somebody in the water. Where some fins get sharp from being worn, the Super Flex Fins are constructed with soft edges.
When we are ready to sell the board, we remove the Super Flex Fin and save it for the next, new board. Then we take the stock fin out of storage (hopefully we can find it and it's still in mint condition), install it on the old board, and we've just upped the resale value of an old board.
The Pro Teck Super Flex Fins come in several sizes:
- 9" and 7"
- 4.5" FCS
- 4.5" Future
Cost starts at $63 and goes up to $74 per fin.
Pro Teck offers other, soft edged fins which are more rigid (called Performance and Power Flex), but they don't bend anything like the Super Flex. Their only, big selling point is the soft edges.
If you're interested in purchasing some send me an email and I can take care of you.
