Ready for an Outer Banks Weekend, 9/9/22
Sep 09, 2022Second Summer
This article states what locals have known about the Outer Banks for a long time. Most workers on the Outer Banks are either too busy or too tired to enjoy the summer. Instead, we enjoy what we call "Second Summer". That's September and October when the traffic lightens, the beach crowds thin out, and the Atlantic waters are still nice and warm.
It always makes me laugh at how many people want to come here for spring break. The ocean is freezing! Save your money and plan a nice holiday in September or October. Just don't forget the travel insurance in the event of a hurricane.
Beaufort, NC
My wife and I just spent a night in Beaufort and we love this place. I would compare it to a bigger, busier Ocracoke where you can park the car and walk to everything.
We stayed at the Inlet Inn https://inlet-inn.com/ and ate at the Front Street Taco https://www.frontstreettaco.com/, among others. We also made a detour to Morehead City's Sanitary Fish Market https://www.sanitaryfishmarket.com/. All of these places were great.
I highly recommend taking a shuttle boat to Shackleford Banks for horse spotting and shell hunting. Island Express Ferry Service https://www.islandexpressferryservices.com/ will take good care of you. We thought one hour would be more than enough time to walk around on this small, barrier island but we grossly underestimated its allure. The warm, blue water surrounding the island will make you slow down and relax. Bring a small cooler and be ready to unwind.
Coming Up- 9/16-9/17/22
"Day at the Docks was started to celebrate the "Spirit of Hatteras" when the village recovered from Hurricane Isabel in 2003 as an intact community, anchored by the commercial and charter fishermen. The event is a confirmation of the strength of community, heritage and living traditions of the waterman."
Have a Great Weekend!
