The Breakers

The author of this article reached out to me for a quote. I warned her that I'm a very boring person. She must have believed me because I didn't make the final cut.

It was cool living across the street from the ocean, but the summer my wife and I lived at The Breakers (1994) was extremely tame. I remember the guys across the driveway were working at the Duck Research Pier and very laid-back. The people to the west of us were also very chill. I don't remember any parties that kept us up at night.

As an aside (and to show how long ago we stayed there), we had no landline that summer so we bought a beeper and when people contacted us we had to walk across the street and use the pay phone in the Lillian Beach Access parking lot.

Text SPAM I Don't Understand

Does anyone else get SPAM texts regarding a discount for "online metals"?
A.  How did I get on this list?  Do they think I'm a welder?
B.  What kind of scam uses "online metal" as the hook? Is it directed to the guys who don't fall for the "horny women want to meet you" hook?
C.  Why are they so persistent? How many phone numbers do I have to block to stop seeing these texts?

My New, Favorite Boot

When my old boots wore out and it was time to replace them I wanted something that wasn't too heavy, a sole that wasn't too stiff, and would keep the sand out of my socks. These Danner boots are perfect for me.

Since it rarely gets too cold here, a full leather boot is unnecessary. However, a boot with a lot of mesh around the toe box will allow sand to seep in (and stay there forever). These boots have the right amount of leather in the critical areas, but they are soft and easy to break-in. The soles are akin to a sneaker, making them extremely comfortable for wearing all day. Finally, they're waterproof. This was not one of my must-have features, but I was pleasingly surprised a week ago when the Outer Banks was experiencing monsoon weather and I had to wade through a three-inch-deep puddle to get in a bus. Cringing as I stepped in, waiting for the inevitable soaking of my socks I'd have to tolerate for the next 8 hours, I was shocked to find my feet were still dry.
