FISH HEADS BAR AND GRILL

Of the many places on the Outer Banks you can go for a cold beverage, Fish Heads has become one of the iconic locations. Fish Heads is located in South Nags Head at the OBX Pier.  I had heard of its reputation as a local, hot spot for years.  I had also driven past it hundreds of times during my beach equipment delivery days and seen the cars parked on the side of the road, indicating a busy day at the bar. I've been meaning to go there for the experience, but time and distance from home (20 miles) were constant deterrents. Finally, friends from Canada invited me out for a beer at Fish Heads and I saw an opportunity to kill two birds with one stone; visit Fish Heads and catch up with some old friends.

Fish Heads is not your modern, trendy bar to get an appletini. It's an old, wooden fishing pier in South Nags Head where the neighborhood turns in to a ghost town during the winter months. That being said, people flock from all over to sit outside on the edge of the ocean to feel like they're in a little piece of paradise. It's funky, cool and a little nostalgic. You can go there to meet friends or make friends. Everyone has the same goal of having a good time.

As an aside, South Nags Head (defined, roughly, as the area from Jennette's Pier to Oregon Inlet) is very cool.  If you want a flavor of what the Outer Banks was like in the '80s you should hang out in South Nags Head for a week to get a good feel of it.  There are very few  commercial establishments in South Nags Head meaning you won't see the big, corporate businesses which have invaded the rest of this area.  What it does have, however, are all types of houses on South Old Oregon Inlet Road, from you giant rental machines to your little, summer cottages.  In addition, there are ramps to access the beach with your 4-wheel drive vehicle, Bodie Island Lighthouse, the Oregon Inlet Campground, and the Oregon Inlet Fishing Center.

If you're looking to plan your next trip to South Nags Head (or anywhere else, frankly), feel free to use this link to Booking.com, and if you do, I may receive a small commission. Cheers!

This aviation lab marries multiple skills and it's located on the historical site where man first conquered powered flight.

SAILING
Hardy Peters, of SailOBX, has faithfully promoted regattas to draw sailors to the north beach. I know the link says 2022, but you'll find up-to-date information for this year's races.
If you want to learn more about Hardy and how he has been a big part of the local sailing scene, listen to my interview with him in Episode #020, https://www.treasuresoftheouterbanks.com/podcasts/treasures-of-the-outer-banks/episodes/2147831145

WHAT TO DO
9/8-9/2023, Outer Banks Kite Festival
You'll be impressed by the huge and creative kites you can see at this event held on Jockeys Ridge.
