Ready for an Outer Banks Weekend, 2/2/2024

Got Trash?

I love my afternoon coffee.  For me, it's a chance to reset and recharge.  If I know I'm driving towards Kill Devil Hills around 1:00pm I'll often go straight to the Starbucks drive-thru.  Starbucks coffee is always good and always hot.  But there's a problem.  Why do they insist on giving me 2 cups and put that stupid, plastic plug in the lid?  You've just doubled my trash for one visit!  Here's the other thing. If I tell them I have my own mug they still hand me my coffee in a paper cup and I have to pour it in to my travel mug. My drive-thru convenience is being flushed right down the toilet. Looks like I'll have to get out of my car. Which is just as convenient at any of the locally owned coffee shops.

On a similar note, what's the deal with Eddie Bauer? They actually market themselves as an environmentally responsible company.  They even have a page dedicated to this mission on their website.
Yet, whenever I shop at their Nags Head store they always put my purchase in a plastic bag. Smack my forehead.

Song I Have On Repeat

"Then Came You"
This rendition by Sheryl Crow is great. Especially the piano accompaniment.  There's something special about watching/listening to musicians in their "natural state".  Stripped of all the musical instruments, glitzy stages, and back-up singers, you get a glimpse of their raw talent and joy of singing.

THINGS TO DO

2/3/24, Cape Hatteras Oyster Roast
Live music, beverages, clam chowder, and oysters.

2/24/24, Chili Cook-Off, Buffalo City Distillery
Another opportunity to warm your insides, but this time with booze!

Lost Treasures

This past week the Outer Banks lost another treasure. Will Thorp, owner of High Cotton BBQ, passed away. Will was the godfather of Outer Banks restaurateurs. He was successful in opening several restaurants and was an expert in hospitality. He was a mentor to many and always supported his peers in the community.

If you'd like to learn more about Will you can listen to episode #016 where we sat down at High Cotton and talked about his career. https://www.treasuresoftheouterbanks.com/podcasts/treasures-of-the-outer-banks/episodes/2147817812

Spring Break

It's not too early to plan a spring getaway on the Outer Banks.
Even if the ocean is too cold for swimming there are still a lot of great things you can do.
  • See the Wright Brothers Monument
  • Hike Nags Head Woods
  • Visit a distillery or winery (Sanctuary Vineyard, Buffalo City Distillery, Kill Devil Rum)
  • Climb a lighthouse (Currituck, Bodie)
  • Tour a museum (Frisco Native American Museum, Pea Island Cookhouse, etc.)
